A GPS receiver measures distances using the time taken to receive radio signals from the nearest satellites. The satellites are therefore used as reference points for our position on earth. In a nutshell, if we know our position from three different satellites (for technical reasons to do with synchronization, four satellites are used) and the position of the satellites is known, we can then calculate our position on earth. This calculation is done for us automatically by the GPS receiver. GPS receivers are now used for locating positions, navigation, tracking, mapping and as accurate time pieces. In making a purchase, things to look out for include the company's return policy, postage rates as well as price and whether or not to accept an extended warranty. Even though GPS can be expensive to repair, most experts recommend not taking an extended warranty even though this gives peace of mind - certainly companies often make most of their profit by selling these extended warranty products.
